An Overview Of Ethernet Over T1

Ethernet over T1 is a more convenient way of sending information over a local area network when dealing with a large group of users over long distances. T1 lines have a larger bandwidth and can thereby support a larger user group, such as corporations and even universities. The bigger the group being supported the larger the bandwidth required. This is also referred to as broadband technology.

An Ethernet is among the most common types of local area networks. The Ethernet computer port is similar in appearance to a larger or wider phone jack. However, an Ethernet connection can be wireless, as well, and is referred to as Wi-Fi. For most households, these jacks typically connect to internet service providers.

Ethernet port speeds range from ten mega bits per second to ten gigabits per second. An Ethernet network is wired in a hub and spoke design as opposed to a circular token ring network. A switch or hub is at the center which controls data flow.

While an Ethernet connects users over a network a T1 represents the system that transfers data. T1 allows data to sent over long distances without signal degradation as it uses a digital stream or transmission. The speed of transmission over a T1 is 1.54 mega bits per second. A T1 line can also be referred to as a DS1. A DS-0 transmits data at 64 kilo bytes per second over a single digital line. A DS1 represents 24 DS-0 lines.

A T1 line or for that matter any T data line can carry multiple digital signals as opposed to a telephone line that can handle a single signal. However, there are limitations to a T1. According to industry experts, T1 lines max out at about fifteen gigabytes of information per day. Simple arithmetic can show that at some point the number of users and their data requirements can become burdensome for even T1 transmission lines.

T1 lines are popular for internet connections or for connecting to ISPs, Internet Service Providers. The Internet backbone utilizes a T3 data transfer system which is equal to about 28 T1 lines. A converter for Ethernet over T1 allows data to be sent over a T1 line.

Thus, an Ethernet over T1 is a fast, reliable way of communicating within large groups of people over distances. However, it is not without its limitations. This method of data transmission is ideal for most mid-size corporations. The larger and more data intensive businesses might require greater bandwidth. Higher speeds and greater bandwidth are not without cost.
